CARDIOLOGY

The British Heart Foundation reveals more than 160,000 people die every year from heart and circulatory diseases in the UK. An estimated 43,000 of those people are under the age of 75. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common heart and circulatory disease. The NHS states coronary heart disease can lead to heart attacks and heart failure. Heart conditions such as heart failure can double or triple your risk of having a stroke.

Stroke occurs when the blood supply to your brain is cut off, while a heart attack happens when the blood supply to your heart is blocked. We are proud to facilitate specialist cardiologists who can help assess your symptoms and maintain your heart health. Our cardiology Consultants use different diagnostic tests and treatments to maintain your heart health.

There are many different conditions that can affect your heart’s ability to pump blood around your body. Heart problems you might require treatment for include:

  • Coronary heart disease (CHD): CHD occurs when your coronary arteries (your heart’s blood vessels) become narrow and blocked. This can block blood flow to your heart and cause angina (chest pains) or a heart attack. CHD may be treated through a coronary artery bypass.
  • Atrial fibrillation: Atrial fibrillation is a form of arrythmia (abnormal heart rhythm). Ablation can be used to treat atrial fibrillation.
  • Arrythmias: Arrythmias can lead to an abnormally fast or slow heart rate. If you have an arrythmia, you could benefit from a pacemaker.
  • Heart failure: Heart failure is when your heart does not efficiently pump blood around your body. You may be fitted with a pacemaker if your heart beats too slowly.

Signs and symptoms can include:

  • Chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure and chest discomfort (angina)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain, numbness, weakness or coldness in your legs or arms if the blood vessels in those parts of your body are narrowed
  • Pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen or back
